I'm trapped in the depths of these deeds that have made me.
I can't bring a sound from my lips though I try.
I can't seem to find my way up from the basement.
This demon holds my place on Earth 'til I die.
— Neko Case, Furnace Room Lullaby
How much madness can the mortal condition take before it snaps?
A seven year old boy, lost in the shopping mall, discovers he can spark fires by thought. An aging woman sits at a park bench at precisely the stroke of midnight, awaiting the man with the lantern with whom she trades human hearts for longevity. A changeling, stolen from his parents so many years ago, sets foot in the city for the first time in what feels like a generation - and the smoky air burns his skin like kerosene.
The world is not so mundane as it would appear, at a first glance. These are the stories of the cursed minority trapped in the furnace room, the between-place, the witching-world betwixt and beneath the mortal earth.
Creating a character
When creating a character for the Furnace Room Lullaby RP, there are a few things you'll need to consider:
- Character background. What led your character to Seattle? What associations do they have here? What connections do they have to their old life? What ties do they have to other characters?
- The little details. How they walk, how they talk, what they look like, what they believe. Characters are brought to life by the little things that make them feel like real people - put some thought into them.
- Character type. The furnace room is rife with the strange and the uncanny. The darlings of so much fiction, vampires and shapeshifters are a common enough sight. So too are mageblooded mortals, riven families, divinely favored religious zealots, and purely mundane but enlightened individuals. Things less known and less understood stalk the dark places as well, however. The range of possible characters is very broad - if you want to play something unusual, talk to a moderator.
- Powers and abilities. Considering the nature of the RP, any character is permitted to have some combination of powers, unusual skills, and magic items. Generally speaking, no character should have more than three or four of these - talk to a moderator about what you want for your character, and we'll work something out.
- Affiliations. Seattle is a staging ground for many influential organizations, and many more less influential organizations. The Council of Ros maintains a presence in an unofficial peacekeeping capacity. The Hollow Commune patrols the streets with a mandate of protecting the innocent. The Guild of Ia deals in secrets, lies, and information - and controls more than anyone likes to admit. Various packs of vampires, shapeshifters, and cults to forgotten Gods battle for control of turf throughout the region. The Thrall are a recent but troubling power, with a violent demeanor and uncertain motives.
