While Gray Emrys is the most usual of human beings among those of far greater power, he has managed to equip himself with at least the knowledge to know what it is that is out there right now, plotting to kill him. With a PhD in Psychology and notable study tracts in, history, language, folklore and - less reputably - witchcraft, Emrys is a veritable walking encyclopedia. He is well-versed in the politics of vampires, the classification of cryptids and the theory of spells.
Beyond that, he is ill-equipped to actually be out in this world of demons, so he prefers to stay in among his mountains of texts where he can pretend he could handle anything the world might throw at him. This has nearly protected him without incident, save for one werewolf attack in his early years of archival work in England. He was saved only by divine providence and one psychotic Irishman called the Courser. Since then, he has become more vigilant – in all honesty, a little paranoid – about the dangers of the supernatural and devoted much of his personal efforts towards becoming the most magically knowledgeable, least palatable human in existence.
preternatural repertoire
- Sorcery. Emrys is an avid reader and has begun to dabble in not only in his usual arsenal of written spells and wards, but also has set foot on the path of a light mage. Swathed in that deceptive title, Emrys's art gives him control over many various aspects of light magic - mirror forging and travelling and the creation of a peculiar brand of guardian humunculi.
- The Five Shadows of Gray T. Emrys. Emrys's humunculi manifest first as his shadows, some faint, some stronger, cast as if from a multitude of candles. When summoned, they take one of two forms - the first petite and docile, the second, if they've learned it, their guardian form. There is Peri, the winged spirit; Bardi, the jackal shapeshifter; Karakoncolos, the boogeyman; Kamer-taj, the moon horse; and Karakura, the night demon.
skills of note
- Languages. Emrys (annoyingly) speaks English, French, German, Spanish, Portugese, Welsh, Gaelic, Russian, Italian, Turkish, Arabic and Japanese. His Irish associate had recently put him through the inconvenience of forcing him to learn Mandarin. He'd have picked it up eventually; he simply resents anything that is inflicted upon him. Give him three weeks.
- Photographic Memory. As far as is humanly possible, Emrys has a very good memory and can reconstruct situations in his head accurately, long after the fact. In that same strain, he can construct imaginary situations and keep track of any possible variations while plotting – a skill that comes in very handy in a game of chess.
